Hoop A Weave

Make a hoop weave using used t-shirts.

If you are teaching children weave, they can become frustrated when trying to figure out maneuver the many levers and strings on a weaving loom. Instead of using a standard loom, show your children weave using a common toy -- the hula hoop. Hula hoop weaving teaching children the basic mechanics of weaving, without the use of complicated techniques. This enables the kids to successfully complete a woven rug or chair mat.

Instructions

1. Lay two t-shirts flat onto a table top, and cut across the body of both shirts to cut out 1-inch-wide loops. Cut out a total of 12 loops, six loops from each shirt.

2. Stretch two loops across a hula hoop in a perpendicular manner so that there is a cross in the center of the hoop. Stretch two more loops diagonally across the hula hoop. Continue stretching on loops across the hoop in a uniform manner, which will create a starburst pattern across the hoop.

3. Lay the remaining shirts flat and cut out 50 more loops from the body of the shirts, as before.

4. Flatten one of the loops into a cord, and insert one end of the cord into the center of the starburst. Weave the loop around the hoop in a clockwise pattern. Push the loop towards the center to eliminate any spaces. Continue weaving more loops around the hoop until the weaving is as wide as you prefer. Tie the last loop onto one of the original loops that is attached to the hoop.

5. Cut off the original loops from the hoop, and trim them down to the length that you prefer before you display the weaving.
