Amplifier grill cloth affects the sound of your guitar.
The grill cloth on a guitar amplifier helps to blend the sound of the amplifier speakers and keep the speaker cones clean. Over time, grill cloths will get dirty and eventually tear. In addition to slightly changing the sound of your amplifier, a ripped grill cloth simply looks ugly. Installing a new cloth grill requires only basic skills. In most cases, though, you will need to disassemble the amplifier before you can install a new grill cloth.
Instructions
Dismantling Your Amp
1. Disconnect your speakers from your amplifier head unit. On some amps, you can simply unplug the speakers, whereas on others, you may need to unsolder the speaker wires.
2. Unscrew all of the screws at the top of the amp casing holding the actual amplifier unit in place. Carefully remove this piece by pushing it through the rear of the amp.
3. Remove the speaker board (the wooden frame that holds the speaker in place) from the back of the amplifier if possible. In most cases, this is accomplished by removing a few screws and gently pulling this piece through the back cavity of your amplifier.
4. Unscrew the corner pieces that hold the amplifier together. Some amps are held together with rivets instead of screws. Pry these off with a screwdriver if this is the case.
5. Remove the board that the old speaker grill cloth is attached to.
6. Pry out any staples holding the grill cloth in place and then remove the old cloth.
Installing the New Cloth
7. Pull the new grill cloth over the wooden frame that held the old cloth. Try to place the cloth directly in the center of the board so that the overhang is equal at all sides.
8. Staple the new grill cloth into place using a staple gun. Do one side at a time, making sure to keep the cloth pulled tight against the frame.
9. Cut off any excess pieces of the grill cloth with a pair of scissors. Dispose of these extra pieces of cloth.
10. Reassemble your guitar amplifier. Put it together exactly as it was before you dismantled it to ensure it will work properly.
Tips Warnings
Never work on your amplifier while it is plugged in.
