Fix the DVD ROM in a Dell Laptop
The DVD-ROM is one of the most essential parts of a Dell laptop and is responsible for reading all your data discs, CDs and software programs. If this drive stops working, it can be very frustrating for any computer user. However, it is very often a simple issue causing the problem. Fixing it involves running some simple tests and correcting whatever is interfering with your DVD-ROM drive's functionality.
Instructions
1. Look on the side of the computer and see if there is a light illuminated. If you don't see a light, you have complete drive failure and will need to open up your laptop to check the power cord and the data cord. If these cords are loose, reattach. If you still can't get the light to shine, you will need to replace one or both of these cords to get the drive working again. If you are not comfortable opening your computer, you will need to contact your computer's manufacturer for repair information.
2. Insert your computer's boot CD. If the light on the side of the drive is illuminated, that means the computer's drive is working and there is a problem with the computer's software. The most likely culprit is a corrupted registry or missing drivers. Repair this by entering your computer's BIOS. Restart your computer and press "F2" during the initial screen. Then press "F9" to reset the BIOS to its original factory settings. Press "F10" to save and continue the boot.
3. Clean the DVD-ROM eye with a specialty disc. If you have been using your computer a lot, the DVD-ROM's laser eye may be dirty or scuffed. Purchase an electronics drive cleaner from an electronics store. Then place the disc in the computer's drive tray and follow the manufacturer's instruction. Note: do not use audio CD drive cleaners in your laptop; make sure the disc is optimized for laptops.
