Pc Repair Home Study Courses

You can learn basic computer repair at home.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, although job opportunities for computer technicians may drop slightly through 2018, those with formal training have the best chances for employment in the field. Taking courses that teach basic computer repair is a good way to start such a career. Various distance programs teach the basics of computer repair and maintenance.

Content

Computer repair programs begin with computer terminology explanations and then move on to hardware and software applications. Students learn about components from the keyboard and mouse to the intricacies of the motherboard. Other courses typically include information about operating systems, types and functions of networks, Internet connectivity and basic software. Besides history and installation, students learn troubleshooting, common issues, error codes, connectivity problems, repair tools and techniques and basic maintenance procedures for various types of personal computers.

Process

With many distance programs, students receive lessons through the mail or through download. Upon completion of each course, students take a test to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts. Through Stratford Career Institute (scitraining.com), for instance, the first module includes information about computer terminology, installation and operating systems. Once the student feels comfortable enough with these concepts, to pass the module exam, Stratford sends out the next set of materials.

The rate for finishing computer repair distance programs depends upon the time it takes students to complete each unit, so the program may take just a couple of months but typically requires less than a year.

Costs

At the time of publication, fees for computer repair distance learning programs typically run under $1000. At Stratford, for instance, the program costs just under $700. Computer repair course fees from distance learning institutions typically include the cost of books, study materials and tutoring assistance. Most programs allow monthly installment payments rather than paying the fees up front, sometimes amounting to as little as under $40 per month.

Requirements

While college courses over computer hardware and software often require students to hold a high school diploma or GED to enroll, distance courses may allow anyone to enroll, regardless of age or educational background. Students under 18 wanting to enroll at Stratford must get their parent's permission, but otherwise few restrictions exist. In fact, some schools such as Penn Foster (penn-foster.com) offer high school diplomas. Penn Foster includes two high school options that focus on computer training, as well.
