Remove A Bathtub Faucet From A Mobile Home

Remove a Bathtub Faucet From a Mobile Home

Mobile home bathtub faucets are usually one-piece assemblies that include both water handles, the tub spout and a lever to send water to the shower head. They mount on the surface of the wall above the tub and are held in place with nuts inside the wall. Mobile home shower faucets are installed the same way--they just don't have a spout. To remove either kind of faucet from a mobile home, you need to get into the wall behind the tub. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Leave the faucet assembly intact. You can't remove the faucet by taking it apart or removing the handles.

2. Shut off the main water supply to the mobile home. Look for the main shutoff valve near your water heater. If it's not there, it's probably in the crawlspace underneath the mobile home.

3. Drain the water out of the supply lines by turning the faucet handles fully open.

4. Open up the wall behind the faucet. In many mobile homes, the "wet wall" holding the bathtub plumbing has a removable back panel. If yours has such a panel, remove it and skip to Step 8. If not, go to Step 5.

5. Purchase a drywall access panel at a home improvement or hardware store. Look for a panel that measures about 12 inches by 12 inches.

6. Measure how high the faucet sits on the wall. Transfer that measurement to the back side of the wall. Mark a square the same size as your access panel, with the faucet location roughly in the middle.

7. Cut a hole in the wall. If the wall is drywall, use a sharp utility knife or drywall saw. If it's paneling, use a hand-held jigsaw or reciprocating saw. Assuming the hole is in the right place, you now have access to the back of the faucet.

8. Unscrew the couplings that connect the water supply lines and the shower pipe to the faucet. Then unscrew the plastic mounting nuts that hold the faucet assembly on the wall. You should be able to loosen these parts by hand. Use a pair of slip-joint pliers if necessary.

9. Pull out the faucet assembly.

10. Install a new faucet, turn on the water and check all connections for leaks. If a connection is leaking, undo the coupling, wrap the threads with thread-seal tape, reconnect and check again. Install the access panel over the hole in the back wall.
