Cedar shaker shingles over siding

Cedar Shaker Shingles Over Siding

Can cedar shaker style shingles be installed over regular exterior wooden siding? Is there anything special I should know before talking to a contractor? What is the current preferred material for vertical shingles? I don't know if this matters but the rear of our two story North Texas home is subjected to direct sunlight and above average winds. In the summer this means extreme dry high heat and wind. Somedays even after dark the air temperature can be near or over a hundred degrees.. Very little moisture in our air. I just learned that if we use Hardi shingles which are on panels the existing siding must be removed. This fact eliminates Hardi due to the prep cost. While eliminating I assume it would be folly to consider Certainteed's vinyl shingles. One last question. Is there any vinyl siding product that will not warp or fade? All comments welcomed. Do your homework- vinyl, in whatever style, expands and contracts an enormous amount. PVC trim for instance has different installation instructions depending on the temperature the day you are putting it in. If cold, you are to leave a gap between boards so that it can expand. You will normally see gaps on cold days, no gaps on hot ones. May explain why the preferred exterior surface in southern states is stucco. Cedar shakes are pretty darn expensive, what is up with the current wood siding that you want to cover? Cedar is not maintenance free, it will require as much if not more attention than your current siding. Thanks. We simply wanted a different look. We love pictures here, they help us synchronize with you so we are all on the same wavelength. Send us a few so that we can put on our thinking caps for you. Cedar shakes will need a flat surface, so you may be in the same boat as with the hardie. Last I checked (and it has been a year or two) cedar shakes were roughly $80 a bundle and there are 5 bundles to a square. Factor that in along with a crap load of nails to put it up with. Not sure if that was retail or contractor pricing - It was for a roof and as soon as I gave the estimate - they switched to arch. shingles. We put vinyl over wood on a couple of our buildings and I would think fiber cement could be done that way as well despite what you posted (I would look more into it). No way would I go to the expense of putting wood on the outside of a building and then have to maintain it.... Prep cost? tearing off siding is practically free if you DIY. It isn't that hard to do. Tearing off the old siding is a prerequisite, for any type of siding, IMO. If you want the shingle look without the hassle of wood, look into one of the types of cement shingles. Hardi and Maxitile make 4' panels, Nichiha makes 8' and 112 panels and some (like Maxi) also make individual shakes of various sizes. I believe we will no longer consider using cedar shingles. Thanks for your help.
