How to lock attic

Lock Attic

Planning interior remodel, and considering locking valuables in attic during unsupervised work periods. We have a pull-down wooden stair system. I can lock the stairs with a hasp, but would prefer to lock the pull down door panel to the ceiling frame without having an unsightly hasp and padlock. There's a security hasp for sale (built-in lock) and that's still ugly. Besides that will still need a step stool to lock/unlock. I'm handy, but neither a carpenter or a welder. Any creative ideas? Thanks! MR2 If it's just going to be temporary during the remodel I would just use the hasp and when their done remove it and patch the screw holes. I agree, unless you have a room not being worked on that you could install a keyed lock on the door. If you want a temporary hidden lock consider one of the magnetic child safe cabinet locks. As long as no one knows that it takes a magnet to open it will be secure. Just screw the door shut with to screws. Im with airman. Just screw it shut. You could use the ones with the square holes in them, forgot the name. would be the best, and I wanted to jump on it, but remember these are workmen and the likelihood one of them would have a screwwdriver is almost 100%. Although the immediate need is for a specific project, I would prefer a system that could permanently enhance attic security. Wayne, where can I learn more about these locks? Thanks for that tip. Has anyone heard of an electric lock (it would have to be economical) with a remote or wireless switch? I think that would be the best. No unsightly padlocks, no outwardly visible installation. Thanks everyone, for your suggestions. Unless better ideas come along, it looks like the hasp. MR2 I would think that a cabinet lock would work just fine for permanent install like one of these. http://www.doityourself.com/invt/036448051243 http://www.doityourself.com/invt/u573284 http://www.doityourself.com/invt/0336826 Security screws! Likely hood that some one would have the wright screw driver slim and none! Am I slow or what?. Of course!! I'll research and check out the various types available, unless you have a specific suggestion. Mattison, I'll look into cabinet locks, as well. This is a GREAT forum. I truly appreciate your inputs. Their are so many on the market! Snake eyes is the one that I think of first. Just a round head with two small holes in it. Needs a special tool! I'm a little curious as to what these valuables are? Also if I was that worried about someone being in my house I wouldn't let them do the work in the first place. I know it's not always possible to check someones reference but if your that worried I would make sure to know who I'm dealing with. You can't always know who you are dealing with! I once painted an extensive house remodel/addition and someone borrrowed the homeowners credit card. I knew the GC and me and my crew were trust worthy although my crew got the most police scrutiny because the cc was used in the town I'm closest to. It turned out to be one of the GC's employees. If you Google child safety locks you'll get a bunch of hits. My kid got them from www.Kidsafeinc.com (sorry can't figure out link) They're installed on the inside and they auto latch. A magnet is used from the outside to withdraw the latch. The one's I've seen are invisible and reasonably strong although tye won't stop a guy with a crowbar.
