98 Honda Accord transmission problems
I have a 98 Honda Accord I-4, 86Kmiles whose automatic tranny has been shifting with a jerking sensation while accelerating from a stop and again just before coming to a complete stop. When coming to a stop, it feels like the torque lockup is released a little too late, but not so late to knock out the engine. This started intermittently and has gradually gotten worse. It also intermittently slips getting into first gear. I happened to me twice today when slowly accelerating up a small incline. It'll shake until I let off the gas to let it catch and then only can I accelerate. Tranny fluid is recent and I used Honda ATF Any ideas of what's going on? Unfortunately my wife drives the car most of the time and didn't complain loudly about this until I mentioned it. I just passed the 7yr warranty limit and I'm not sure if the dealer will honor anything, but I'll try later this week What would typical wear items be in an auto tranny? anyone try fixing one themselves? Any chance this might simply be some sticking relays? (I hope?) Yes, you may just have sticking valves. I think your car uses the BAXA tranny. Did this start after the fluid change. Does it happen in all gear ranges or only one. An additive would be the first thing to try. A frction modifier like Lubegard may help. Just make sure it compatible with Honda's tranny fluid. The better thing would be to pull and clean the valve body but it is a lot more work. Not too bad if you can get it out without taking the tranny out but not always the case. Hi rav12, This all started many years ago and seemed to have slowly gotten worse over time analogous to shocks going bad over time. It's irritating now... New tranny fluid did not make any difference. Shifts from 2-4 and back to 2 are ok. The jerking only happens getting into first or coming to a complete stop. I got a hold of a Haynes manual, but it doesn't say anything other than checking the solenoids are ok when battery voltage is applied to them and they click. Kinda subjective if ya asked me... Does fluid level make any difference? Suppose I fill it a tad higher than high or a tad lower than low? Still doesn't explain the slipping that day though... I talked to 2 different dudes at the dealer last week when I sent it in to get and ignition switch recall done. Both played ignorant, though I could tell one obviously knew something but didn't say anything thanks again! Sounds to me like the problem is with the 1-2 and 2-1 shifts I think based on what you are saying. Normally the transmission goes into 1 as soon as you select one of the forward gears. If it slips as soon as you move there is something wrong with the first gear - if you feel slipping during the first shift then it is the 1-2 shift that is causing this. Minor fluid level variations should not affect the shifts. If the level is very low then you can get slipping or delayed engagement. The Haynes manual is not really the thing to use for troubleshooting transmissions. I have seen the the tranny section in a Haynes for the Accord and really does not tell you very much. You will need the BAXA service manual and I do believe ATSG do one for this tranny. I also doubt if the solenoid is causing this. My best guess is that you have a damaged seal in one of the clutch pistons or servos or that the friction metarial on a band or a clutch pack has worn. Unfortunately the latter can onlly be fixed by a rebuild although the mileage is a bit low to require one I think. I would suggest getting the ATSG manual - it may give you some better tips on what could be causing this. You skipped right over rav12s suggestion to try Lube-gard I have seen this stuff do a good job with shifting problems. I am presently having the same jerking issue when coming to a stop. please forward the solution if you find one.
