Remove an Alternator on a 2005 Ford Escape
The alternator on a 2005 Ford Escape is located on the rear-right side of the engine, near the top of the intake manifold. It is driven by a serpentine belt and secured to the engine with metric steel bolts. When the vehicle's engine is running this alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical accessories. As it ages, the alternator's performance decreases causing a number of drivability issues such as dim lighting, engine stalling and insufficient battery charging. Replacement alternators are available from auto parts stores and licensed Ford dealerships.
Instructions
1. Place the Escape's gear selector in park for an automatic transmission, or first gear with a manual transmission. Set the parking brake, turn off the engine and open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery terminal using the battery terminal wrench.
2. Locate the spring-loaded belt tensioner on the left side of the engine. Insert the square end of the long-handled, 3/8-inch ratchet into the square hole on the tensioner. Rotate the ratchet clockwise to compress the tensioner, creating slack in the serpentine belt. Slip the belt off of the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
3. Disconnect the alternator's electrical connector. Remove the nut holding the positive voltage wire to the alternator using a 3/8-inch ratchet and a metric socket. Remove the positive voltage wire.
4. Remove the metric steel bolts holding the alternator to its bracket with a 3/8-inch ratchet and a metric socket. Remove the alternator from the engine.
