I have found what appear to be sections of mud tunnels in three places around my home. In one location there are three tunnels side by side extending about 3 inches down from the bottom of the siding. In another location a two-inch mud tunnel extended from a wall across the garage ceiling. These are not active tunnels, but I’m wondering if they are evidence of past termite infestations or something else? My home is located in a rural part of southern Massachusetts.
They are probably mud wasps, or mud daubers they collect mud/dirt and mix with a water source, using their saliva make tunnels the width of a pencil, they are lightly coloured hollow looking tubes with small ridges. (hollow when empty of course)
They usuallly make these under eaves, rafters, siding etc. Then the female uses this tunnel to deposit larvae, until they mature, she a thin coating is placed at the bottom to protect the larvae. Only If you are sure that
they are inactive, (if they are hollow) they would have hatched already, I would knock them down and remove them.
