Valentine'S Wood Projects

Show someone you care with memorable wood crafts.

Preparing for Valentine's Day requires a little time and planning as well as good intentions and creative thinking. Whether you want to make a special handmade gift or spend some quality time and build a wood craft with your child, several options are available.

Wooden Heart with Scrapbook Paper

Craftideas.info offers various holiday wood projects including the Wooden Heart with Scrapbook Paper. You'll need four-millimeter plywood, scrapbook paper, paint, glue, a drill with a 1.5 millimeter bit, silver wire, ribbon, a hot glue gun, saw and sanding supplies. Begin by printing out a heart template online or trace one from scratch directly onto the wood. Next, cut the heart out with a saw and sand off any rough edges. Cover the heart entirely with glue, then flatten scrapbook paper--with the pattern side pressing against the wood--across the heart and hold firmly for 20 seconds to allow to dry. Using a sheer patterned paper for this step provides optimum viewing of shapes. Drill two holes at the top tips of the heart and thread with wire for hanging. Grab your ribbon and fold into a bow, attaching with glue. Finally, paint the edges of the heart to add a two-dimensional look to the finished product.

Valentine's Foot Stool

You can build a Valentine's Foot Stool for an adult or child. You'll need one-quarter to one-half inch thick plywood, a hand or electric saw, nails, a hammer, sandpaper or sander, casters, two- to three-inch foam, upholstery glue and fabric. Cut the plywood into four equal pieces--14 x 14 works well for the adult size--and sand off the edges before you continue. Next, nail the base, sides and top together at the corners. Cut a piece of foam sized to fit the top piece and attach with glue. Allow foam to dry and then wrap the entire stool with fabric. Your local craft store offers various colors, patterns and textures--hearts, red velour, cupid, etc. Staple the fabric on the bottom and screw in casters for easy mobility. Consider painting your Valentine's name on the sides with fabric paint or using a stencil to create a heart or lovebirds pattern around the base.

Hanging Heart Mobile

A Hanging Heart Mobile is simple to make and fun to receive. You'll need thin plywood, a saw, sandpaper, wire and cutters, a drill with a 1.5 millimeter bit, a pencil, scissors, colored beads, glitter and glue. A hot glue gun is also helpful. To begin, either print out an online heart shape or draw a heart onto the wood and cut out. You will need to make at least two hearts--and the size of the first one dictates the size of the second. One should be approximately half the size of the other. The larger heart acts as the outside shape, thus you need to leave approximately one and half to two inches of material intact and then cut out the center of the heart. The smaller heart is left in full wood form. After you have two hearts, drill a hole in the center top edge of each heart. Now paint both hearts with red, pink or white paint and add applicable colors of polka dots or stripes or arrows. Spray with adhesive glue and sprinkle with glitter or brush with a glitter paint. Allow time to dry and then attach the hearts with wire so the smaller one hangs inside of and below the larger one. Finally, drop colored beads on or tie a ribbon around the wire at the top of the large heart. For added affect, use a metallic pen and write the recipient's name in the center.
